Conclusion

Summing up the analysis of the given extract one should say that the Mark Twain brilliantly uses all stylistic devices, especially: irony, sarcasm, humor and wit, which help to reveal the main characters' nature as well as to create a true-to-life atmosphere of the events depicted. He gave Adam and Eve personalities and showed a new version of Biblical events. Twain deeply described Eve's character, he showed us her like funny, energetic, sometimes irritable, self- educated, hearted, real woman, whom we can only try to found. Probably women will jealous her and men will try to find such "ideal" woman.

Stylistic Devices

In order to portray the characters to describe the setting and to render the atmosphere of the passage vividly and convincingly the author of the analyzed passage resorts to the following devices:
1)lexical: metaphor- THE SCRATCHED EXPERIMENT SHUNS THE THORN.”, “"THE BURNT EXPERIMENT SHUNS THE FIRE." personification -  "The moon got loose last night, and slid down and fell out of the scheme --a very great loss; it breaks my heart to think of it"; "brilliant yellow and red flares shot up through the smoke" metonymy  - "If it is a reptile, and I suppose it is; for it has frowzy hair and blue eyes, and looks like a reptile. It has no hips; it tapers like a carrot; when it stands, it spreads itself apart like a derrick; so I think it is a reptile, though it may be architecture." ; "For I feel like an experiment, I feel exactly like an experiment; it would be impossible for a person to feel more like an experiment than I do, and so I am coming to feel convinced that that is what I AM--an experiment; just an experiment, and nothing more." periphrasis -  "Oh, you fire, I love you, you dainty pink creature, for you are BEAUTIFUL--and that is enough!”,"  It has ceased from lying around, and goes about on its four legs now. Yet it differs from the other four legged animals, in that its front legs are unusually short, consequently this causes the main part of its person to stick up uncomfortably high in the air, and this is not attractive. It is built much as we are, but its method of traveling shows that it is not of our breed. The short front legs and long hind ones indicate that it is a of the kangaroo family, but it is a marked variation of that species, since the true kangaroo hops, whereas this one never does.", “she is a quite remarkably comely creature --lithe, slender, trim, rounded, shapely, nimble, graceful; and once when she was standing marble-white and sun-drenched on a boulder, with her young head tilted back and her hand shading her eyes, watching the flight of a bird in the sky, I recognized that she was beautiful.euphemisms -  “he is as God make him, and that is sufficient.” : “the smile of God ” irony – “It is up there yet. Resting, apparently. But that is a subterfuge: Sunday isn't the day of rest; Saturday is appointed for that. It looks to me like a creature that is more interested in resting than it anything else. It would tire me to rest so much. It tires me just to sit around and watch the tree. I do wonder what it is for; I never see it do anything.”; “When I found it could talk I felt a new interest in it”:
epithet - “beautiful creatures”, “transparent bluish film rose out of the hole”, “cunning and pretty”, “it was useless, it was a foolishness and a vanity ”, “dainty pink creature”, “He is strong and handsome” “she is a quite remarkably comely creature --lithe, slender, trim, rounded, shapely, nimble, graceful; and once when she was standing marble-white and sun-drenched on a boulder, with her young head tilted back and her hand shading her eyes, watching the flight of a bird in the sky, I recognized that she was beautiful.”. simile - "  It looks no more like a dodo than I do.", "  That sounds like a cheap fling at the poor creature", "  not like kangaroo fur, but
exactly like our hair except that it is much finer and softer,", "The new one is as ugly as the old one was at first".
2)syntactical: ellipsis – “FEAR.”, “Tuesday--Wednesday--Thursday--and today”, “FLAMES”, “and said OUCH!”, “Fire-coals.”: aposiopesis - "I wish it would stay with the other animals. . . . Cloudy today, wind in the east; think we shall have rain. . . . WE?" : inversion – “Resting, apparently”, “It is pleasant again, now, and I am happy;  repetitions – “I AM--an experiment; just an experiment”;  climax -  "And this new sound is so close to me; it is right at my shoulder, right at my ear, first on one side and then on the other, and I am used only to sounds that are more or less distant from me", " the result will be a great and fine and noble education ";
3)phonetic: alliteration-he is MINE and is MASCULINE I wish it would stay", " It looks no more like a dodo than I do.", " does not look like " ;

Literary Analysis

  1. The extract under analysis comes from a short story  written by Mark Twain. The author is a well- known American writer, journalist and publicis, but his real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. His works are of different genres - humour, satire, science fiction, journalism and many others, but in all these genres he takes a position of humanist and democrat.  He wrote a lot of stories, among them are "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"(1876), its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), which is often called "the Great American Novel", «The $30,000 Bequest and Other Stories» (1906),and «Life on the Mississippi»(1883). He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age," and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature."
  2. The extract concerns relations between the first man and woman on Earth - Adam and Eve. It also describes Eve's feellings, emotions about her first days on the Earth, about her investigation the world.
  3. The basic theme of the story is attitude between first woman and man, the battle of sexes.
  4. The events in the analysed extract happen in Eden many millions years ago. It was the beginning of the world The setting of the events in the given extract is mixed, because it has some realistic, historical and exotic elements. It is presented in a general specific way, in the form of a diary. It provides a background for action and  reflects the characters' emotions and feelings.
  5. From the point of view of presentation the text is the 1st person narrative. But also we can find a small dialogue between main heroes of the text.
  6. The characters we meet in the extract under analysis are Eve - she is the protagonist. And Adam, he is kind of secondary hero in the text. The writer reveals Eve by means of narrative description with implied judgment. From both fact and judgment we derive the impression of the main character as a strong, responsible, caring, self educated and curious woman who lived alone in the Garden of Eden, who was, always, ready to investigate something new, to give names everything that she could see for the first time. When the narrator informs us that she was trying to get used with the Adam we come to share her fellings (love), emotions, behaviour. The following comment of the narrator clearly indicates that Eve was surprised and quite scared, whe she saw Adam for the first time: "  I think it is a man. I had never seen a man, but it looked like one, and I feel sure that that is what it is. I realize that I feel more curiosity about it than about any of the other reptiles. If it is a reptile, and I suppose it is; for it has frowzy hair and blue eyes, and looks like a reptile. It has no hips; it tapers like a carrot; when it stands, it spreads itself apart like a derrick; so I think it is a reptile, though it may be architecture.
    I was afraid of it at first, and started to run every time it turned around " She was full of interest, wanted to know more and more about the man, Eve was ready even  follow him, in order to know him better : " All the week I tagged around after him and tried to get acquainted. I had to do the talking, because he was shy, but I didn't mind it. He seemed pleased to have me around, and I used the sociable "we" a good deal, because it seemed to flatter him to be included."  Eve was also  glad to be of use:" When the dodo came along he thought it was a wildcat--I saw it in his eye. But I saved him. And I was careful not to do it in a way that could hurt his pride. I just spoke up in a quite natural way of pleasing surprise, and not as if I was dreaming of conveying information, and said, "Well, I do declare, if there isn't the dodo!" I explained--without seeming to be explaining --how I know it for a dodo, and although I thought maybe he was a little piqued that I knew the creature when he didn't, it was quite evident that he admired me".
  7. The plot of this novel runs as follows: in the form of a diary. It is the first-person account of Eve from her birth up to her burial by her mate Adam, including meeting and getting to know Adam, and investigating  the world around her in the Eden. The story then jumps 40 years into the future after the Fall and expulsion from the Eden.
  8. The types of speech employed by the author of the analyzed extract are narration, description, and monologue. The given passage is rather a description than a narration.

The Author

Before, I will present you literary analysis of the text, I would like to say some words about the author of the text.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885),  the latter often called "the Great American Novel."
Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his singular lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," was published, based on a story he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp California where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into classic Greek.] His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.
Though Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he invested in ventures that lost a great deal of money, notably the Paige Compositor, which failed because of its complexity and imprecision. In the wake of these financial setbacks, he filed for protection from his creditors via bankruptcy, and with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers eventually overcame his financial troubles. Twain chose to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full, though he had no legal responsibility to do so.
Twain was born shortly after a visit by Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it," too. He died the day following the comet's subsequent return. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age," and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature."

EXPECTATIONS

I did all the task about the text early, but I did not have enough time to be active here and to print all the stuff about the text. So, let's proceed to my expectation from the text.

    Before, I have read the story, I expected that this story would be boring, not funny, to some extent, religious. Just something which concerns the creation of the world, the beginning of the world. How did the God create Adam and Eve. If to say the truth, I did not realise that this story is about Eve and Adam, I thouhgt that it ie about some girl, which shows us her life through the diary. I was wrong, do u find it ridiculous?))
    The title of my story is "Eve's Diary" , so I expected to read something about Eve's life, her beginnings, her fillings, probably, how she met Adam etc. She was the first woman in the world, I thought that everything we have, could be probably named by Eve or Adam. Everything that they had at that moment.
    I couldn't wait for a long time, and started to read an extract. I was very excited!
